“I don’t suppose I really know you very well - but I know you smell like the delicious damp grass that grows near old walls and that your hands are beautiful opening out of your sleeves and that the back of your head is a mossy sheltered cave when there is trouble in the wind and that my cheek just fits the depression in your shoulder.” —Zelda Fitzgerald, in a letter to F. Can't talk I'm writing a novel...

Tuesday was the 1st November which meant only one thing: the beginning of National Novel Writing Month. I’ve been thinking about taking part in NaNoWriMo since the Summer, when I was unemployed and had tons of free time on my hands. Now I have a full time job, but continued with my plans and signed up anyway. I figured that I may as well have a go, after all there’s nothing to lose.

Now we’re coming to the end of Day 3. My word count is not as high as I would like it to be, but I’m confident I’m on the right track. What I’m enjoying the most though, is the fact that the point is to just write and see where you get to. As somebody who has always struggled with the need for ‘perfection’, re-reading and re-writing over and over again is something I do obsessively, until now. I’m finding it quite liberating not to be worrying too much about whether or not a word is right and to instead worry more about developing plot and getting it all written down.

So far working full time is not posing too much of a problem either. I’m finding time to write in the evenings and on my lunch breaks. Hopefully this will continue.

I realise it’s early days yet, but fingers crossed, in 27 days I’ll have a novel!
